يكي از مسائل مهمي كه در بحث نفقه و مهريه مطرح است، بحث شأن زوجه است. در رابطه با نفقه و مهريه پژوهش‌هايي زيادي انجام شده است اما در هيچ‌كدام بحث شأن زوجه مطرح نبوده است، لذا در اين عرصه خلأ و كمبود احساس مي‌شود كه ضرورت پرداختن به شأن زوجه را در دو مقوله نفقه و مهريه (مهرالمثل) اقتضا مي‌نمايد؛ بنابراين مسئله مهمي كه وجود دارد اين است كه؛ آيا اساساً شأن زوجه بر نفقه و مهريه مؤثر است و اين تأثير تا چه ميزان است؟ بالأخره پس از بررسي آراي فقهاء، آيات قرآن، روايات واصله و قانون مدني ايران ثابت شد كه شأن زوجه بر نفقه تأثير مستقيم دارد و كم و كيف نفقه زوجه متأثر از شأن زوجه مي‌باشد و رعايت نكردن شأن زوجه موجب ضمان است و آثار حقوقي در پي دارد و در رابطه با مهريه، تنها قسمي از مهر كه شأن زوجه در تحديد آن دخيل است، مهرالمثل مي‌باشد. در اين رابطه نيز نكته مهمي كه به دست آمد اين بود كه در تعيين ميزان مهرالمثل بايد وضعيت و شأن زوجه را نسبت به زناني كه هم‌رتبه و هم‌رديف با او هستند بسنجيم و صفات زوجه كه در بالا بردن ميزان مهرالمثل مؤثر هستند نيز بايد لحاظ گردد.

Discussion of wife dignity is one of the important issues which is mentioned in topic of alimony and dowry. Many researches are performed about alimony and dowry but discussion of wife dignity is not mentioned in none of them, but in this field vacuity and shortage are felt that necessity for investigating wife dignity is required in two categories of alimony and dowry (proper dower). Hence there is important issue which is that does wife dignity basically affect on alimony and dowry and to what extent is this effect? At last after investigating the opinions of jurists, Quran verses, received narrations and Iran civil law, it was proved that wife dignity has direct effect on alimony and quantity and quality of wife alimony is affected by wife dignity and not to regard wife dignity causes liability and it resulted in legal effects and in relation with dowry, only part of dowry which wife dignity is involved in its limitation will be proper dower. In this regard also important point was achieved in which in recognition of the amount of proper dower, we should measure opportunity and wife dignity towards women which are in the same rank and line with her and traits of wife which are effective in raising the amount of proper dower should be applied.
