Problems posed by outside works of both spouses have created high stress of overlapping work and family responsibilities. This study aimed to examine the mediating role that emotional intelligence can play in the relationship between work-family conflict and love schema with respect to the extramarital relationships of both working couples. The statistical population for this correlational research was all working couples who had visited the counseling centers under the supervision of the Counseling and Psychology Organization in district one in Tehran, Iran from the beginning of August to the end of October 2021. A sample of 212 people (106 couples) was selected through non-random sampling method. Research instruments included Schutte, Malouff, Hall, Haggerty, Cooper, Golden, and Dornheim's (1998) Emotional Intelligence Scale, Carlson, Kacmar, and Williams' (2000) Work-Family Conflict Scale, Singelis, Choo, and Hatfield's (1995) Love Schema Scale, and Whatley's (2006) Attitudes toward Extramarital Relationships Scale (2006). Data analysis was performed descriptively and inferentially using SPSS-26 and AMOS24 software. The results showed a significant positive and direct effect of work-family conflict (P <0.001) and unstable love schema (P <0.001) on the attitude toward extramarital relationships. Moreover, there was a significant negative and direct effect of safe love schema (P <0.001) and emotional intelligence (P <0.001) on attitudes toward extramarital relationships. However, the direct effect of clingy love schema on attitudes toward extramarital relationships was not significant (P <0.05). The effect of safe love schema, unstable love schema, and work-family conflict on attitudes toward extramarital relationships with respect to the mediating role of emotional intelligence was significant. Yet, the indirect effect of the clingy love schema on attitudes toward extramarital relationships was not significant (P <0.05).
